I'm Matthew Cohen, head furniture maker at Matthew Cohen Fine Furniture. I have taken great care in building each of the pieces on this web site by hand. Through the employment of advanced and timely milling, joinery and finishing techniques my furniture will last for generations to come.

I grew up In Iowa City, Iowa and had a pretty typical childhood of building tree houses and taking yearly vacations to National Parks in the Western US. As my aspirations for more difficult projects grew I became more and more influenced by my father who is known for being a perfectionist. In 2000 I entered Iowa State University to pursue an architecture degree and follow in my father's footsteps. By 2003 I was realizing that I wasn't working with my hands enough and I left ISU to pursue cabinet and furniture design. After a relatively short application process I was accepted in to the prestigious North Bennet Street School where I completed the Cabinet and Furniture making program a semester ahead of schedule.

Upon completing the CFM program at NBSS I returned to Iowa to build custom furniture and work for a local contractor where I was one of three cabinetmakers building projects for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and other small commercial jobs. After about six months of working in Iowa I decided that I needed to move. I chose Colorado as a destination because of job opportunities and also because of the easy access to the Rocky Mountains where I could pursue my hobbies of rock climbing and skiing.

When I arrived in Denver, Colorado I worked in a high-end cabinet shop building cabinets and furniture for multimillion dollar homes in and around the Denver area. After a year of this I decided that it was time to go out on my own and take the level of quality even higher. I moved to Estes Park, CO in September of 2008 and briefly worked as a finish carpenter while getting a business plan in order.

Today I am still located in Estes Park, CO where I am building furniture and cabinets in my shop that overlooks Rocky Mountain National Park.
